Park Hill Neighborhood

The West End Opportunity Partnership is a significant economic investment initiative launching in the
West End to overcome challenges stemming from the intergenerational effects of racial prejudice and
segregation, which have hindered progress for African Americans in Louisville.

Park Hill
Working Towards Community-Led Change

Located in south-central Louisville, Park Hill is bordered by Algonquin, University, California, Shively, Taylor-Berry, and South Louisville. It has approximately 5,100 residents and is a host to several community resources and growing opportunities. Its central location puts Park Hill close to several activity hubs in downtown, central, south, and Old Louisville, and these benefits attract a multitude of different residents, from families to single-person households, with a mixed range of incomes. Park Hill shares educational borders with the Algonquin neighborhood for Louisville public schools, and school-aged children in the area are included in the district for:

  • Mcferran Preparatory Academy
  • Maupin Elementary
  • Wheatley Elementary
  • Cochran Elementary
  • Frayser Elementary
  • Carrithers Middle School
  • Highland Middle School
  • Noe Middle School
  • Ramsey Middle School
  • Western Middle School
  • Seneca High School
  • Iroquois High School
  • Fairdale High School
Park Hill Neighborhood in West End of Louisville, KY

The community in Park Hill is close-knit and active, and this is aided in part by the Parkhill Community Center located at the Parkhill Park. This community-oriented area hosts local tournaments and athletic competitions, as well as arts and crafts programs, senior programs, and academic activities. The park and community center offers a ballfield, outdoor basketball courts, a picnic shelter, a playground, a sprayground, free wi-fi, and a Dare to Care Kids Cafe food bank that offers free evening meals to children ages 18 and under.

Park Hill has a lot of opportunity coming its way, most of which is community-led and related to the renovation of the Park Hill Industrial Corridor. In particular, the 17-acre former Rhodia site that began environmental remediation for soil contamination in 2023 has allowed huge steps for existing residents to hold the power of their future. The current brownfield that was once an eyesore of broken concrete and overgrown weeds is overseen by the Park Hill/Algonquin Community of Opportunity Advisory Board and ensures that a community-led process was put in place to understand and inform the cultural, social and economic needs of the neighborhoods impacted by the future activity hub. The plans for the space include a ‘live, work, play’ design that include employment and economic opportunities, health and wellbeing spaces, housing, education, community empowerment, and other miscellaneous services and amenities that will benefit the community.
